What is Check4Update?
Check4Update is a resource monitoring service which should be installed on a standalone server or pc with permanent network access.
It allows registered users to monitor any number of online resources of different types for updates and changes. Check4Update supports various protocols to accessed these resources and provides several modules to do the resource content inspection depending on the mime type of the content.

After a modification of the resource was detected, the system sends out a notification message to inform the user.

The Check4Update service can be configured by the user via the Check4Update Web interface. There is no need for the user to install extra programs or tools on his/her pc.

What resource access methods are supported?
Currently Check4Update supports the following transport protocols/techniques to access the content of an online resource:
  • http(s) get
  • http(s) post
  • soap rpc
  • ssh
  • scp

Is it planned to supported additional protocols?
Yes. It's planned also to support
  • ftp
  • CIFS/SMB
  • Newsgroups
  • CVS?

What types of resources are supported?
Currently the following different types of online resources are supported:
  • static and dynamic HTML websites
  • HTML websites including framesets
  • Zip / tar / jar / Lha files
    using the directory entries for monitoring
  • Gzip / Bzip2 files
    monitoring the uncompressed file
  • Pdf files
    Exctracting the text and monitoring this text for changes
  • Doc files
    Exctracting the text and monitoring this text for changes
  • RSS Feeds
  • XML documents
  • XML response of a SOAP call
  • Response of a via SSH executed program/script
  • iCalendar files
  • Simple text files
  • Any other text content ...
    ... is handled as simple plain text document
Support for additional resources e.g. the support of ftp directories will follow.
What notification types are supported?
Currently the following notification types are supported:
  • email notification
    either plan text or html emails
  • HTTP notification
    either http Get or Post requests
  • SOAP RPC notification
  • ICQ notification
    only eperimental
Additional notification types e.g. like a RSS notification will follow.
